AR(dap)T utilizes a simple system of aggregation to create a project that will not only engage
the community as a traveling locality but further bring people together as active participants
as it reassembles itself throughout Santa Barbara. Inspired by the goal of encouraging community interaction, our design exists as a singular component that is easily assembles to create unique and inspiring spaces. Because of the traveling nature of the pavilion and multiple artistic collaborators we sought to design a highly dynamic and adaptable system rather than a singular environment. We expect that the different artists involved in the project will have dramatically different ideas and concepts regarding community engagement, as such, our design accommodates; The space may exist as a collections of dispersed podiums and plinths, it can accommodate an intimate closed space for smaller groups to come together, create thin shells of vast poster space for participants to exhibit or operate as a stepped viewing gallery for community performance. Our proposal exists not as a specific pavilion but as a skeleton ready to be infi lled by the people.

 

As an outdoor pavilion that will be disassembled and reassembled several times throughout
its lifespan, our design is constructed of rebar reinforced concrete. As precision and control
is absolutely necessary for a clean aggregation, our components will be fabricated through
a highly replicable casting created through the utilization of CNC milling, a rapidly emerging
technology within architectural practice.


The geometry of AR(dap)T is inspired by recent advances within the world of material science,
drawing upon the idea that structures can gain strength, lose weight and increase volume
when assembled from many small parts. Essentially a tessellation of truncated cuboctahedron, the design creates rapid volume with minimal material. As there is only a singular
type of connection detail participants can quickly understand the inherent assembly logics
required to build nearly any form. At the edge condition of the tessellation, the scaffolding
offers a highly adaptable attachment point to expand the capabilities of the pavilion. The
pavilions adaptability will release constraints on artistic interventions becoming a transmutable
participant in the artwork.
